You can now get hired to eat veal sandwiches in Ontario

Are you a lover of Ontario’s Italian delicacy, the veal sandwich? Have you ever wished you could make pounding delicious sammies your occupation?

Well, your dream job is here: Veal Farmers of Ontario is looking for professional veal sandwich eaters.

If you’re not familiar somehow, Italian veal sandwiches place fried breaded veal cutlets smothered in cheese and sauce on a crusty bun. They’re especially beloved here in Ontario, where we have a large and vibrant Italian community and where hundreds of restaurants serve the popular dish.

Veal Farmers of Ontario holds a competition to crown the best veal sandwich in the province every year, but this year, they’re asking ordinary food lovers to pitch in on the judging.

“Every year that we’ve held the competition we receive enquiries from people who love their veal sandwiches, wanting to know how they can get the amazing job of eating veal sandwiches and judging them just like us,” says Jennifer Haley, VFO’s executive director, in a press release.

“We knew it was time to expand the judging team. We will train and send out only our best applicants and, using their feedback as a guide, narrow it down to 10 semi-finalists who will move forward to competing for the title of Ontario’s Best Veal Sandwich 2024.”

Other than just eating and judging the sandwiches, people hired for the position will be expected to order sandwiches undercover, take photos and videos, and fill out a judging form. Successful applicants will get paid training, be compensated for each restaurant visit and be reimbursed for the sandwiches.

Veal Farmers of Ontario first started the competition for Ontario’s best veal sandwich in 2016, making it an annual event in 2018 and 2019 due to the success of the first competition. After taking a hiatus due to the pandemic, the competition started up again on a biannual basis in 2022.

The past winners are Highview Food & Drink, Nostra Cucina, Kantene Restaurant (now closed) and Mettawas Station.

During the judging period from May 9 to July 11, Veal Farmers of Ontario will be promoting the participating restaurants and sharing sandwich reviews on their social media. After that period, the top 10 scoring sandwich places will be visited by Food Network’s John Catucci and the VFO head judging team. They’ll decide the top two restaurants that will compete for the title of Ontario’s Best Veal Sandwich 2024 on August 17 at the CNE Celebrity Kitchen Stage.

Veal Farmers of Ontario is accepting applications for veal sandwich eaters until May 8.
