Top 5 Chinese takeout restaurants in Toronto

Chinese takeout varies greatly in Toronto, from your local go-to spot on the corner to delivery from fancy restaurants. The places below are agreed upon by many to be reliable, tasty, convenient and representative of the comfort that Chinese takeout can bring. Some of these spots have been around forever, and you’re probably on the right track if you’re ordering from somewhere around Chinatown or Dundas.

While General Tso chicken, noodles, beef dishes, soups and dumplings are some of the most popular items to order for takeout from these places, they often have extensive menus that mean you can place an order for whatever Chinese food your heart desires.

5 – King’s Noodle

BBQ pork and duck are some of the most popular items at this Chinatown institution. Fatty, glistening meats full of rich flavour are piled on top of sticky white rice.

True to their name, King’s Noodle also does great noodles, with some of the most popular options being wonton noodle soup and noodles with ginger, green onion and oyster sauce.

4 – Lee Chen Asian Bistro

This restaurant is a great one to opt for when you’re looking for classics like black pepper beef, chow mein or sweet and sour chicken with pineapple. The chicken has a pleasant sweetness and stickiness that isn’t too overwhelming, and the beef has a great warmth to it thanks to a perfect balance of black pepper.

They also make excellent soup dumplings, dan dan noodles and mapo tofu. Whatever you’re looking to include in your Chinese takeout night, this place probably has it.

Lee Chen has locations on King West, at Yonge and Bloor and even in Aurora.

3 – New Ho King

The General Tso chicken from this Chinatown restaurant is a deeper, darker red than most, with nice big chunks of tender meat. Their Shanghai-style fried noodles are popular, and they’re nice and thick and not too greasy. This place is great for getting really generous portions.

New Ho King is also famous for becoming an unexpected part of a beef between rappers Drake and Kendrick Lamar, with Lamar name-dropping the restaurant.

2 – Hong Shing

The neon orange General Tao chicken from this restaurant near University and Dundas is exactly what many picture in their heads when ordering Chinese, with lots of little nubs and deep-fried crumbles to soak up all the sauce. It’s well complemented by stir-fried egg noodles with large, juicy shrimp, or some soulful fried rice.

The restaurant has been around since 1997, so you know they’re reliable. Nowadays, they often introduce new different items and specials, so it’s a great place to depend on that’s also always offering something new.

1 – Chop Chop

Dundas West is home to this restaurant that does some excellent takes on traditional Chinese takeout food. Noodles and chicken get the spotlight, but they also have some surprising star dishes like blistered, garlicky green beans. Mapo tofu and rice are also a great go-to for a soothing night in.

Throw in a green onion pancake, their cucumber salad or some of their delicious dumplings to round out your meal from here.
