CLOSURE: Brunch spot closes after nearly a decade in Hamilton

A brunch spot that’s been in business for nine years, nearly an entire decade, has just suddenly and abruptly closed down due to issues with the landlord of their space in Hamilton.
Motel has been serving up breakfast and brunch dishes in the confines of a motel-themed space in Hamilton, with a very cute and polished aesthetic. They’ve become known over many years for their bougie brunch dishes like pancakes topped with gold flakes, chicken n’ waffles, French toast and Eggs Benny.
Now, the restaurant has taken to social media to suddenly announce that they have closed their doors due to some issues that they have been having with the landlord of their Hamilton space.
“It has been our absolute pleasure bringing brunch to you for the past 9 years. We appreciate every moment, but is time for us to move on. After months of negotiations with a new landlord that is situated in a Toronto real estate market, we simply could not get a deal done. We were honest about our intention to close and let’s just say that news was not met with a very warm reception,” reads a post on social media signed by the team at Motel.
“We wish anyone that takes this space the very best of luck. Now more than ever, this industry requires us to work together as owners of the property and businesses to make things work long term including fair rents and terms. Our intention was to announce our plans to move on earlier to the public after we had made our decision but the relationship with the landlord deteriorated quicker than we expected it would.”

The post goes on to say that anyone who has any gift cards for Motel should contact the restaurant so they can ensure they can be validated.
Many people commented on the closure announcement on Instagram saying they’re outraged about the situation.
“there should absolutely be a very public list of said landlords who feel profit is worth closing off community. I’m so sorry to hear – I’m so angry on your behalf,” reads on Instagram comment. “I hope every other storefront on Barton opens and flourishes and that your location stays empty indefinitely (so the landlord feels the other side of the coin). Thank you for being one of the first to bring big attention to this area of Barton!”
The Motel website now reads, “Our location is closed. Thank you for nine amazing years.”
