Cheap eats are plentiful on the Danforth, where there’s easy access to lots of affordable Greek food. There are a whole bunch of other options that won’t break the bank, however, including restaurants for fried chicken, Middle Eastern cuisine and good old-fashioned diner fare.

Here are some of the top cheap eats along the Danforth.

5 – Levande Bakery & BBQ

Baked goods and Middle Eastern cuisine are available for fair prices at this restaurant. They serve wraps and plates as well as baked items like mini pies, but they have some good deals on manakish.

These thin and crispy flatbread pies start around $5.99 and they’re decently sized, roughly equivalent to a typical personal pizza. A meat pie is topped with flavourful and hearty minced meat blended with spices and veggies that could easily feed two, or one hungry person.

4 – Messini Authentic Gyros

Gyro pitas stuffed to bursting with meats, fries, tomato, onion and tzatziki are under $15, good value considering their size. They’ve also got pork or chicken souvlaki skewers as well as spanakopita or tiropita for under $10.

If you want to add an economical side or snag a cheap but filling snack, try the Greek fries or Greek poutine with feta for around $10.

3 – Juicy Birds

Filling and flavourful fried chicken is available from this tiny takeout spot right near Pape station. The thigh or tender meal are both a reasonable deal at $12.99 for large pieces of chicken on a bed of fries with sweet pickles, a thick ranch sauce and a drink. The thighs are, true to their name, nice and juicy, and the Nashville hot spice level will likely knock your socks off in the best way.

They also have sandwiches for around the same price point, and wings are $10 across the board. Bonus: this restaurant is actually halal.

2 – Souv Like

Pork or chicken gyros are just $10.75, and are stuffed so full of meat and fries that the soft, fluffy pita barely closes. The fries are crispy, the meat is incredibly moist and flavourful, and the whole thing is drizzled with a zesty sauce.

Veggie wraps are also just $8.50, and souvlaki skewers are just $5.50 apiece.

1 – Square Boy

This reigning king of cheap eats on the Danforth is located right near Donlands station, and is distinctly recognizable due to its humongous orange sign that towers over the neighbourhood. Inside, the atmosphere and food are as old school as the sign, with tight booths, an arcade game table, and a cash only policy.

At first, the straight up hamburger might seem like the best deal, and technically it is at just five bucks. However, locals know to shell out a couple more dollars for the homemade burgers that are made in house, and still start at a very reasonable $7. They’re worth the price with a great beefy flavour, decent portion size and your choice of any toppings on the burger.

They’ve also got hot dogs, onion rings and fries for under $5, and their souvlaki on a bun is also a good value deal.
