The Michelin Guide hasn’t been recommending restaurants in Toronto for long, but they just came out with a new best-of guide listing the best Japanese restaurants in town.

It makes sense they’d create a Japanese guide for Toronto, as Japanese restaurants dominated their recommendations when Michelin released their first ever Toronto guide, with many taking home stars. Japanese restaurant Sushi Masaki Saito is the only restaurant in Toronto to have snagged two Michelin stars.

There are six restaurants that make up the Japanese guide, and don’t worry, they’re not all ultra high end sushi counters that demand reservations for lengthy seatings.

The restaurants in the guide are Kaiseki Yu-zen Hashimoto, Aburi Hana, Sushi Masaki Saito, Yukashi, Musoshin Ramen and Shoushin.

Shoushin and Sushi Masaki Saito are upscale spots that have perfected the art of omakase, a dining experience that leaves the courses on the menu entirely up to the chef. Kaiseki Yu-zen Hashimoto, Aburi Hana and Yukashi all exemplify a kaiseki experience that takes diners through multi-course meals that can illuminate aspects of history, personal stories and the seasons. If you’re looking for a more low-key Michelin-recommended experience, Musoshin Ramen is a more humble spot that makes one of the very best bowls of ramen in town.

Michelin also put out a guide to the best French restaurants in Toronto which listed Alobar, Alo, Dreyfus, La Banane, Lapinou, Pompette, Scaramouche and Union.
