A new spot serving up breakfast sandwiches with Palestinian-inspired flavours has just swung open its doors in Toronto, and it’s already making waves.
Toronto has no shortage of breakfast sandwiches, so if you’re a newcomer to the scene, you had better be prepared to offer something majorly different that the city has never seen before. A new sandwich shop, Makann, might just fit the bill with a unique new lineup of Palestinian-influenced breakfast sammies.
All of their sandwiches are made to order on freshly baked flatbread. Right now there are five breakfast sandwiches on the menu at Makann, which is more than enough to make it difficult to make a decision.
To start off with, there’s a basic za’atar sandwich with za’atar spread, cucumber, tomato, fresh mint and olives. Ringing in at $7.50, there’s an option to add labneh for a $1.50 additional charge.
From there, three sandwich options are priced in the mid-range of the menu at $10.
These include the foole and egg sandwich with fava bean paste, egg, home fries, sumac onions and a signature special sauce. The egg and cheese breakfast sandwich has caramelized onions, home fries, arugula and special sauce, with the option to add turkey for an additional $2 charge.
If you want to bring your love of za’atar and egg together in a very special breakfast sandwich, the za’atar and egg sandwich option is also available for $10. That one comes with za’atar spread, egg, sumac onions, arugula and special sauce.
For now, the most expensive sandwich on the menu at Makann is the labneh and smoked salmon breakfast sandwich, topped with capers, cucumber, sumac onions and fresh mint.
To accompany their roster of tasty sandwiches, Makann also serves Palestinian treats, coffee and tea on the side. Treats might include options such as Palestinian date rings, barazek (sesame pistachio cookies) and daoukieh, a traditional pistachio dessert.
It’s more of a takeout space with a small amount of square footage, so Makann is oriented more towards grab and go service.
The new Palestinian-inspired sandwich shop is located on Bathurst just north of Bloor, near Toronto’s lively Koreatown area with many diverse food options. While Korean food is very well represented in the area, there are also lots of other restaurants serving a wide array of cuisines from around the world, so this sandwich spot should fit right in within the food scene in the local neighbourhood.
Makann is now open at 866 Bathurst St. in Toronto.
