A Toronto shop just made a list of the 100 most iconic ice cream parlours in the world.
Ed’s Real Scoop is well-known to Torontonians for their expert ice cream and gelato making, and their burnt marshmallow flavour was selected as one of the world’s most iconic ice creams. Ed’s was founded in 2000 and makes everything in house, and has locations in The Beach, Leslieville, Mimico and on Roncesvalles.
The parlour placed on a list of the world’s 100 most iconic ice creams put together by Taste Atlas. While the ice cream shops aren’t ranked as such, Ed’s is one of very few Canadian parlours on the list that’s dominated by Italian and American places.
“In every corner of the world, you’ll find a delightful symphony of frozen treats, an array of creamy concoctions spun into existence by passionate artisans. Frozen desserts, in their myriad forms, are a universal language of delight. Gelato, ice cream, and dondurma all offer unique takes on frozen desserts,” reads the intro to the Taste Atlas list.
“Each variety, while sharing a common love for the cold, presents unique characteristics, shaped by regional ingredients, techniques, and cultural influences. This list presents the 100 most iconic gelaterias and ice cream parlours that have left an indelible mark on the global dessert scene. It encompasses establishments that have honed their craft sometimes even over a century, serving time-honoured flavors like chocolate and pistachio, or inventive combinations like ricotta and pear, sesame seeds and rice.”
Taste Atlas calls Ed’s burnt marshmallow flavour “a delightful twist on a campfire classic that has captured the hearts of Toronto’s dessert lovers.”
Along with all the Italian shops, the Canadian places on the list compete with American heavyweights like Ghirardelli in San Francisco and Salt & Straw in Portland. The other Canadian shops that made the list are Cows in Cavendish for their Wowie Cowie, Le Bilboquet in Montreal for their mango sorbet and La Casa Gelato in Vancouver for their durian flavour.
Some other somewhat surprising countries that managed to make the list include Greece, Poland, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Ireland, Scotland and Mexico.
