A new pop-up series in a Toronto neighbourhood themed around global communities is coming soon in honour of FIFA and the “World in a City” theme of the games.

The Around The World Pop-Ups will span five whole weeks. The pop-up takes place at multiple venues across a neighbourhood of Toronto, both indoors and outdoors.

The festivities will include interactive workshops, walking and food tours, live music, outdoor markets, film screenings and art installations. The pop-up series is family friendly and open to all ages, and includes a mix of free and ticketed events.

Some of the standout events that will be a part of the unique pop-up series that will be over a month long include a circus walk, an Indigenous drum circle, outdoor sketching, a pop-up thrift market, a film screening, a music crawl, coffee ceremonies and food tours.

If you’re into food, check out a food tour of six local restaurants from six different distinct cultures, or check out a coffee ceremony at an Ethiopian and Eritrean restaurant where you can learn about the traditional cultural significance of coffee. If you’ve got kiddos with a sweet tooth, try Stories and Sprinkles at a daycare centre, which will be an afternoon of stories, creativity and family fun with live story time followed by a hands-on cupcake decorating activity for children.

Love music? There will be lots of music-based events as well, like a hands-on experience where you can explore instruments and sounds from around the world, a jazzy live trio at a beer hall and an Indigenous drum circle by the Spirit Wind Hand Drum Collective.

There will also be a pop-up thrift market with live music and a clothing repair workshop, a film screening at a pub, a live outdoor community drawing event, a crawl of live music in public spaces and a circus walk with jugglers, mimes and drag queens.

“Our new Around The World series shines a light on Cabbagetown’s vibrant community, spaces, and businesses. Toronto really is a world within a city, and Cabbagetown is a direct reflection of this. We have shops, attractions, architecture, and people that represent cultures from around the globe. It’s a beautiful and inclusive neighbourhood where everyone is welcome,” said Matthew Mohan, Executive Director, The Cabbagetown BIA.

“Day or night, there’s always something exciting happening in Cabbagetown – come check out what our neighbourhood has to offer!”

Around The World will take place from June 11 to July 19 in Cabbagetown. Check the official website for more details about locations and timing.
