A Michelin-recommended restaurant for some of the most theatrical omakase in Canada will soon be opening their very first location in Toronto.

Okeya Kyujiro already has locations in Montreal and Vancouver, but when you visit any location of the restaurant you’re intended to feel like you’ve been transported straight to Japan without ever stepping foot on a plane.

If you’re not familiar, omakase loosely translates to “chef’s choice,” and typically implies an elegant dining experience that’s entirely dictated by the chef.

Not only do they use the best fish from Japan and around the world to make the best quality dishes, they also use Japanese dining ware and cooking tools, and their whole omakase experience is highly interactive. With dishes prepared right in front of guests, dining at Okeya Kyujiro is almost like a cross between a performance and a dining experience.

Okeya Kyujiro was originally founded by chef Takuya Matsuda from Mie Prefecture, Japan. In the food industry since the age of 15, he has 25 years of experience.

The Toronto location in Yorkville has been under construction for two years, and will mark the third location for Okeya Kyujiro.

The opening of the Toronto location was set for April, but has been delayed. There’s now no official confirmed opening date, but Okeya Kyujiro tells YourCityWithIN that they’re aiming to open in early May.
