We’re all familiar with No Frills, but they’ve just opened a totally new kind of store in Toronto.

No Frills is a big box grocery chain so most of their stores are huge, but they’ve just introduced a different kind of smaller store.

The new small format No Frills measures under 15,000 square feet, which is actually less than half the size of a typical No Frills. Otherwise, much about the new space is just the same as any other location.

This No Frills will offer the same prices as well as in-store and flyer promotions you can find at any location of the chain. The supermarket stocks the same selection of groceries like produce and meats as any other No Frills. This new concept replaces an Independent City Market that used to be at the location.

Aside from the smaller size, there are a few other things about this new No Frills that make it just a tiny bit different from larger ones. Specially locally sourced products that are intended to cater to the community’s preferences should be available at the store, along with hot food, rotisserie chicken and fresh baked goods.

“The new, smaller format gives us flexibility when determining new locations, whether in urban or rural settings, we can now open stores where Canadians need them most, improving access to lower cost food,” said Melanie Singh, president of hard discount, Loblaw Companies, in a press release.

“While smaller in size, the shopping experience will be comparable to the large format store – we design each new location with a full grocery shop in mind, according to the customers who shop there, stocking the brands and products they want most at the prices they have come to expect from No Frills.”

The new small format No Frills opened recently at the corner of King and Shaw in Toronto.
