An art gallery and shop in Toronto is being forced to close their doors due to the sale of the building where they’ve been residing.

Toutoune Gallery has been operating as one of the most unique gallery and art spaces in Toronto that also functions as a shop, a colourful splash in the middle of a quiet stretch of the street.

The gallery and shop took to social media recently to announce that they unfortunately are being forced to close their doors due to their building being sold.

“I’ve been procrastinating this announcement because it is PAINFUL!!!! It’s the last weekend Toutoune will be open at 998 Bathurst St.,” reads a post from Toutoune Gallery on social media.

“I, for one, have been fearing this big change (though I do also try to trick my brain into focusing on the silver-linings like for example being forced into taking a vacation finally?) I’m excited for the prospect of starting over in a new space later (I’m still searching for the right place). Meanwhile, I will be hybernating slightly. Toutoune will be a webshop only for however long it takes me to find a new space. Whatever remains after this sale will be sleeping in a storage unit for a little while.”

The post has over 2,000 likes from sympathetic people who were sorry to hear the news of Toutoune’s closure, and over 100 comments on Instagram.

Even local artist Sook-Yin Lee commented on the post, writing, “We heart @toutoune.gallery & Ginette Forever. Thank you for bringing us together.”

“Toutoune forever and ever and ever and ever and ever. you did something incredible with this space…. toutoune @ bathurst you will be missed… but you will be back even STRONGER,” one commenter wrote.

“Nooooooooooooooooooo but also yes Toutoune will ride AGAIN! Thank you so much for the best store in Toronto !!! We love u Ginette Toutoune 4ever,” someone else commented.

“Oh no!!! I hope you find a good spot with a decent landlord sooner than later! Toutoune is a really special place,” another commenter wrote. “Truly heartbreaking to see this date come so soon :-(( im so grateful for this space that you created! i will miss coming here so very much

Hopefully this isn’t the end for Toutoune Gallery, as the social media post says they’re hoping to reopen somewhere else soon, hopefully by springtime.

The last shopping day open for Toutoune Gallery will be Feb. 13.
