CLOSURE: Popular neighbourhood coffee shop being forced to close its doors in Toronto

A very popular community coffee shop has announced that they are being forced to close their doors in Toronto due to a difficult set of circumstances.
The landlord for coffee shop Coco’s let them know just a week before their lease was up that they actually intend to keep the space for themselves. This has left the cafe in dire straits, with many circumstances making it difficult for them to quickly and successfully move to a new location rather than closing their doors entirely.
The cafe has become well known as a community hub and for their excellent cafe fare, including chocolate chip cookies, breakfast sandwiches and cakes that are widely considered some of the very best in the entire city of Toronto.
“Well friends, this is the post I dreaded ever having to make but we have some news to share. Sadly our landlord has declined to renew our lease. By their own admission we’ve been perfect tenants, but unfortunately despite previous conversations in the months and weeks leading up telling us we had nothing to worry about, a week before our lease was up we were informed that his sister wants the space for herself to open a homeopathy clinic. This plan had apparently been in place for quite some time while we continually invested the space with our new patio, electrical upgrades etc. This news also had the unfortunate timing of coming as I was heading into my second trimester,” reads a post on social media from Coco’s.
“We searched intensely for a new location while remaining on month to month. Unfortunately we are working with a limited budget and timeline to realize such an undertaking- we had a pretty tight deadline for ourselves to try to make it happen and there just wasn’t a space that made even a bare minimum of sense for us. The business has been hitting a stride we’re proud of, but we just don’t have the pockets or the logistical capacity to fund a move, renovation, miss holiday sales, and then hire and train new staff to cover my maternity leave all in the span of a few months.”
