CLOSURE: Home goods store closing due to rent increase in Toronto

A home goods store in Toronto known for unique finds and specializing in traditional rugs has announced they’re closing their doors due to an unsustainable rent increase.
Qalat is a modern Moroccan rug store, and sadly it won’t be long before design buffs won’t be able to head there to check out their stock.
“Qalat is Arabic for ‘she said,’” reads the official website for Qalat.
“These rugs are the personal stories of the women who weave them. Each rug is full of emotion, messages and magic. This is Berber art.”
The store took to social media to let people know that they would need to close their doors soon.
“A significant rent increase has brought us here, and we’re choosing to receive it as a nudge — an invitation to let go, trust the timing, and step toward the next adventure. What a chapter it has been,” reads a post signed by operators Ruby and Hamid.
“Qalat was never just a store. It became a gathering place, a bridge between cultures, and a sanctuary of art and meaning. Every rug carried the spirit of the woman who made it, and each of you helped bring this space to life.
While we’re sad to be closing our doors, we’re also dreaming forward. New creative chapters are already taking shape, and we look forward to sharing them with you in time.”

The post has gotten almost 100 likes and many comments on Instagram, and goes on to say that the store will be having a closing sale with 30 per cent off prices.
“You created such an amazing store with beautiful products, and it’s so sad to see it end because of a horrible landlord. I’ll really miss it,” one person commented.
“It’s amazing to see somehow who truly deeply cared about the rugs here and is excited to tell the stories of them,” another person wrote in a comment. “Sad to see you go!”
“I remember hearing you talk about this dream of yours,” someone else commented. “Well done for seeing it through and keeping it alive for 6 years.”
“Eloquent words as you wrap up your beautiful business, with new chapters and adventures ahead,” commented another person. “I am excited to hear about your upcoming plans! And so glad to have some Qalat treasures forever gracing my home.”
Qalat will be closing its doors on April 25.
