A beloved community grocery store is shuttering its doors after nearly three whole long decades in business in Toronto due to a big rent increase.

Pasta Goodness is a grocery store selling prepared foods, handmade pasta, soups, sauces, desserts and more. They also operated as a catering company.

The grocery store took to social media to let their community know that they would no longer be able to move forward with the business due to an unaffordable increase in the rent for their shop.

“After 29 years, we are heartbroken to share that we have made the incredibly difficult decision to close our doors. As a female-run business, this has never been just a place of work. It has been our life — something we built with our own hands and poured our heart and soul into every single day. Over the years, you became so much more than customers. We broke bread together. We shared stories about our families, our joys, and our struggles,” reads a post on social media from Pasta Goodness, signed by operator Angela and her team.

“We watched your children grow up before our eyes, and you watched ours. We celebrated milestones together, and we mourned losses together. This space has been filled with real connection, real community, and real love. Due to a significant increase in rent, we are no longer able to continue. We did everything we could to stay, but in the end, we were left with no other choice. We are devastated. Thank you for letting us be part of your lives for nearly three decades. That is something we will carry with us forever.”

The post has over 100 likes and over 70 comments from people on Instagram who are heartbroken to see the neighbourhood store leave the area.

“So sad to hear this news. You are a pillar on Marlee and loved by many people,” one person commented. “We live down the street and I’ve be coming to your store since you opened with my nonna. Christmas lasagna will never be the same.”

“No!!!! How can this be??? Your lasagna is the absolute favourite staple at my breaking-of-the-fast buffet!!! This is simply heartbreaking,” another comment reads. “WHAT??? where can we buy your products?”

Fortunately for disheartened commenters and customers, comments from operators offers some consolation.

“After 29 years of pouring our hearts, souls, and every drop of passion into Pasta Goodness, we must now bid farewell due to a rent increase we simply can’t sustain. Our family has cherished every moment of sharing the Italo-Canadian experience with you—through highs, lows, laughter, and tears,” reads a comment.

“The community’s support has been our greatest honour. Though this chapter closes, we hope the memories of shared meals and special moments linger in your hearts. We’re not disappearing—just transforming. We invite you to continue embracing our traditions at our flagship, Continental Noodles in Vaughan. Our family’s legacy lives on, just in a new home. Thank you for 29 unforgettable years.”

Another comment from the Pasta Goodness account reads, “Keep finding our products @pastificioliberatore.”

The last day for Pasta Goodness on Marlee Ave. in Toronto should be March 31.
