CLOSURE: Clothing boutique closing down after over 20 years in Toronto

A store selling clothing and other accessories has emotionally announced that they will be shutting their doors, posting a heartfelt message on social media.
Frock describes itself simply as “a small boutique,” but it has been so much more than that to the local community over the course of its 23-year history in Toronto. Now, sadly, that history will be coming to an end after nearly a quarter of a century.
“Dear Frock customers, my name is Jim Pauk, the owner of Frock, having taken over from my wife, Cathryn Dajka, after her passing in 2022. Frock has been a much loved staple on Roncesvalles Avenue for 23 years and has had a truly beautiful relationship with the Roncesvalles community. Unfortunately, however, the difficult decision has been made to close our doors due to ongoing financial challenges,” reads a post on social media from Frock.
“When I took over Frock, it was with the hope of honouring Cathryn’s beautiful legacy. With the help of a dedicated team, we worked hard to continue what she had built. However, as with many small businesses today, it has been challenging to remain financially sustainable after COVID, especially without Cathryn’s guidance.”

The post received nearly 1,000 likes within just hours of being posted on Instagram, along with over 100 sentimental comments, including lots from local neighbouring business owners.
“Cathryn and Frock will always be incredible, legendary and iconic,” nearby store Imelda commented. “I’m so grateful I met Cathryn and so appreciative of all the retail wisdom she imparted on me. I wish you peace, joy and love Jim. Beautiful tribute.”
“This is beautiful and so sad. Frock has been such an inspiration to us other business owners and has been such a staple in the Roncesvalles community,” reads a comment from another nearby business, Scout. “It will truly be missed but the clothes I’ve collected over the years will always be a reminder.”
“Sad to be losing such an iconic cornerstone and neighbour, the team you built to carry Cathryn’s vision forward has been remarkable to witness. Wishing you and the team all the very best,” wrote Coal Miner’s Daughter.
“This one hits hard. Frock will forever by on my Greatest Hits album of Toronto indie boutiques. I’ll miss you guys so much, but as a former shop owner myself I am also extremely aware of the giant weight that is about to be lifted from your shoulders, Jim. Mazel Tov and wishing you a relaxing next chapter,” reads a comment from Kenilworth Floral.
Frock expects to be winding down their operations around mid-spring.
