A brunch pop-up that’s only open for a few hours once a week and serves viral hot chocolate has just opened inside a French restaurant.
J’s Steak Frites has come up with hit concepts before, and this new pop-up brunch restaurant is their latest one. They’ve become known for their prix fixe steak frites meals since they opened, and now they’re branching out into brunch territory.
Cafe de Ville is the name of their new brunch concept, and it’s only open on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. right now.
The over-the-top French brunch menu at Cafe de Ville is seriously stacked with all kinds of classy favourites. There are tons of options on deck when it comes to baked goods alone, with a wide selection of house made croissants and pastries plus baguettes.
They’re also serving up soft boiled eggs with toast soldiers, madeleines with Chantilly cream, French toast, croissant sandwiches and baguette sandwiches.
The presentation doesn’t miss either, with everything looking super cute. Some items even come served in an epic brunch tower.
However, the star of the show might not even be an actual food item, but rather a drink that’s gone totally viral in Paris. To accompany their traditional French brunch service, Cafe de Ville is also serving chocolat chaud à l’encienne, made of 70 per cent single origin cocoa and topped with fresh whipped cream.
The brunch pop-up seems to perfectly imitate the viral Parisian hot chocolate, which is known for being very opaque and rich. The way the whipped cream is served with it is also an iconic element of the experience: a very generous portion is served on the side so that you can scoop it up and top your hot chocolate with the appropriate amount of sweet and sugary whipped cream.
J’s Steak Frites actually started out on Queen Street West, but they’ve since moved their operations to College Street in the Little Italy neighbourhood. Newly opened restaurant Liliana has since taken up residence in their old digs on Queen.
Take care to note that Cafe de Ville is walk-in only and there are limited seats available. The entire experience is designed to transport you straight to Paris without the price of airfare, so lining up for a bit to experience this limited time pop-up is a small price to pay.
Cafe de Ville is now open inside J’s Steak Frites at 577 College St.
