A bakery cafe just opened a new downtown location after operating just one spot for nearly 50 years.

Michel’s Bakery Cafe has long been a beloved fixture at Yorkdale, but now they’ve opened a location that downtowners can access without heading to the mall.

Michel’s Bakery Cafe wasn’t always located at Yorkdale, though, and it wasn’t always called that. In fact, this new location isn’t even their first downtown. The brand started out in 1979 as Michel’s Baguette at the Eaton Centre, opened by Michael and Lou Bregman who were also behind Mmmuffins and Bregman’s. Michel’s Baguette was rebranded to Michel’s Bakery Cafe in 2009.

Michel’s Bakery Cafe locations are independently owned, and products are baked on site. Their menu includes baked goods, soups, salads, sandwiches, breads, breakfasts, hot meals and coffee.

In March, Michel’s posted to social media that their Yorkdale location is relocating within the mall, saying their new cafe in a modern location will be in the central corridor next to the Crate & Barrel. They’ve since replied to comments on social media saying the new Yorkdale location should be opening next month.

In April, they announced on social media that they would be opening a whole new second location downtown.

The second location of Michel’s Bakery Cafe is now open in the Marketplace area in First Canadian Place at 130 King St. W. Take care to note the location is currently closed on weekends.
