There’s a family-owned, women-run blueberry farm in Ontario that just opened for blueberry picking season.
Wilmot Orchards boasts 11 varieties of highbush blueberries which are available for picking during the short and precious season that starts around the end of July and only lasts about three to four weeks.
Not only can you pick blueberries at Wilmot Orchards, the farm also has an on-site cafe called AppleBerries that serves blueberry ice cream, smoothies and baked goods like cheesecake, coffee cake, tarts, and squares.
The history of Wilmot Orchards extends back to 1975, and the family that runs it planted their first blueberry bushes in 1979, opening for their first blueberry season in 1983. AppleBerries Cafe has been in business since 1994.
Picking reservations in blocks of an hour and a half can be booked online and are free on weekdays, $5 on weekends.
Wilmot Orchards is now open Wednesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., and on Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
They’re located in Newcastle, about an hour east of Toronto, at 3337 Concession Road 3.
