A block of shops that have been operating for many years in Toronto was just totally wiped out by a redevelopment project taking place in the area where they’ve been doing business, according to the local BIA.

The Midtown Yonge BIA took to social media to make an official post announcing the closure of a block of businesses in the neighbourhood, many of which had not made their own official announcements or even have a public platform to do so.

“Some goodbyes are harder than others,” the BIA wrote in a social media post with an accompanying video.

“A few long-time local businesses at the corner of Yonge and Davisville had to close recently due to upcoming construction, and it’s tough to see them go. These spots were part of Midtown’s everyday life, and they’ll definitely be missed. To everyone who ran and worked in those spaces: thank you for all the years of dedication, care and community. We’re rooting for you, wherever you go next.”

The post has over 400 likes and over 35 comments on Instagram, with dismayed commenters calling the transformation a “loss” and “sad.”

“So disappointed by this. These local businesses are what make Midtown special, and it’s a shame to see so many of them getting pushed out to make way for unaffordable condo buildings,” one commenter wrote.

The BIA reports in the social media post that all the businesses on the east block north of Davisville are closing or have closed, except for Circles and Squares. The businesses that are definitely shutting down on the block are Pizza Pizza, Kramer’s, Hot Black Coffee, Fresh Buy Market and Fruit Basket.

Kramer’s, a bar and grill, did make official announcements about their closure back when they were first notified they’d need to close due to redevelopment back in the spring. It’s possible that some of the businesses on the block that are part of the wave of closures will be relocating.

“MYBIA is not involved in the construction project, and unfortunately, we do not have information about where these businesses may have relocated. But we’re always here to support,” reads the BIA’s social media post about the closures. “If you have any information that we can share with the community, please DM us.”

The businesses on the east block at Yonge and Davisville are closed down due to a new condo development that will be taking up residence at the corner.

The post announcing that the businesses had all closed was made on Sept. 16.
