A chain of restaurants for Taiwanese-style fried chicken with Canadian locations in British Columbia is gearing up to open their first ever Toronto location soon.
J&G Fried Chicken already has Canadian locations in British Columbia in Burnaby at The Crystal Mall and in Richmond at The Aberdeen Centre. Now, they’re teasing that a downtown Toronto location should be opening soon.
The J&G Fried Chicken brand has origins that extend all the way back to the 1970s, when the business started out as a very simple food stall at a wet market. The restaurant became a chain in the 2000s and steadily grew into the 2010s, gradually opening hundreds of locations. They have stores in Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia and now Canada.
They serve a menu with a signature range of fried foods like fried chicken, popcorn chicken, deep-fried cuttlefish balls, crispy deep-fried calamari, garlic seasoned king trumpet mushrooms, fries, and even more unusual items such as “Italian-style” cuttlefish tempura.
J&G Fried Chicken is also known for their wide variety of refreshing drinks to wash all that deep-fried food down. They’ve got iced teas, fruit drinks, lemonades, and other options like sparkling peach yogurt drinks, kumquat watermelon drinks and sour plum drinks.

“It is hard for some to imagine the process that we went through to standardize fried chicken, which includes oil quality, frying temperature, frying equipment and meat quality. We take pride in achieving a standardized procedure with continuous breakthroughs. With cautious quality control and staff development, we strive to implement the same procedure to achieve the same quality standard across all our domestic and international outlets,” reads the J&G Fried Chicken official website.
“From 2010, we have extended our operations globally and established international ventures.”
The new location of J&G Fried Chicken should be opening soon in downtown Toronto.
“Started out as a street cart on the side of the Ji Guang street in Taichung, Taiwan and being famous for its made-to-order Signature Popcorn Chicken since 1973, J&G has been delivering the nostalgic flavor of the Taiwanese style fried chicken to different parts of the world,” reads a post from J&G Fried Chicken Canada on social media.
“With opening the first North American location in Burnaby BC back in 2018 and now over 500+ locations globally; the Toronto expansion also marks the first location on the East Coast of the North American continent! We have to admit it hasn’t been a smooth journey and there were definitely some bumps on the road, but we are stoked to be in Toronto to share some fried chicken love.”
There is no set opening date for the new downtown Toronto location of J&G Fried Chicken.
