A taco business with a supernatural name has been growing in Ontario at a rate that’s scary fast.

Ghost Taco deals in what they call “unauthentic Mexican” and already has two locations in Ontario, and is on track to open two more soon. They currently have locations in Newmarket and Vaughan, and they’re now franchising.

They serve tacos, bowls, sides and desserts with options for tacos like Baja fish, birria quesa, chicken tinga, charred brussel, crispy Korean tofu and “Alabama chicken” with fried chicken and Alabama white sauce.

The project actually started as a pop-up after the people behind Ghost Taco were forced to close their events business due to the pandemic. They eventually got the attention of well-known local chef Matt Basile, and he became their consulting chef.

“The plan was always for Ghost Taco to disappear (hence the name). But it didn’t take long to realize we were onto something special. We were slammed with orders every time we posted our hours, and people came from far and wide demanding to try GTA’s best tacos,” reads the Ghost Taco website.

“We used the next two years to perfect our menu, our packaging, and our restaurants. And today, we’re building our very own taco empire. Our mission is simple – deliver chef-inspired tacos that threaten the status quo.”

They certainly are on the road to building an empire, with plans to double their number of locations this year. Their Vaughan location just opened at a Kitchen Hub this month, and their first location in Newmarket at 247 Main St. South only opened at the end of last year.

Ghost Taco should be opening a Peterborough location at 110 Chandler Cres. on July 3, and a Whitby location in winter 2024.
