Looking for Vietnamese comfort food made from scratch in Toronto? If so, you’re in luck, as there’s now a brand new spot serving up traditional favourites.
Broken Rice serves up rice dishes, rolls and noodle dishes, with their menu revolving around the broken rice the restaurant is named for.
“Broken Rice started with a love for the everyday meals we grew up with—simple, comforting, and made with care. In Vietnamese culture, cơm tấm—broken rice—was once seen as less desirable, but over time, it became a beloved staple. That idea stuck with us: that something imperfect can still be full of value and meaning,” reads the Broken Rice website.
“We set out to create a place where people could enjoy those same kinds of meals—grilled meats, fresh rolls, warm rice dishes—served with honesty, care, and a sense of home. But what truly brings it all together is the team behind it. Every dish reflects not just our culture, but the quiet effort and respect shared in our kitchen each day. Empathy, hard work, and looking out for each other—these are the things that have brought us this far, and the things we hold onto as we keep growing.”
Dishes at the restaurant can be served on a foundation of their signature broken rice, or on vermicelli noodles or salad. Their options for proteins are grilled lemongrass chicken, house pork sausage, shredded striploin beef, grilled lemongrass pork chop or shredded Australian lamb leg.
Broken rice and vermicelli bowls are also loaded with veggies, such as cabbage, radish, carrot, green onion, lettuce and coriander. The salad bowls have a similar base of cabbage, carrot, green onion and coriander and are tossed with an Asian sesame vinaigrette.
They also serve fresh rolls with shrimp, house pork sausage or pork rind, as well as spring rolls and pork sausage skewers. To wash it all down, they’ve got coconut, mango or avocado smoothies.
Broken rice dishes start around $14. All products are made in house with natural ingredients, and they promise fast and convenient service.
The restaurant has also been posting behind-the-scenes content showing how the concept came together on social media, from finding their space back in June 2024 to installing equipment around the beginning of 2025. They also posted about the inspiration behind their design sense, showing a moodboard with lettering, colours, imagery and packaging.
Broken Rice is now open at 613 Yonge St.
