A major chain of grocery stores that already has locations all over Toronto is now opening a brand new location.
Access to fresh groceries is not only important but also convenient, and more grocery stores opening in Toronto only means easier access to food shopping for everyone. Fortunately, a brand new location of a grocery store chain with 65 years of history behind it is opening soon to make life easier for shoppers.
Longo’s is a family-owned chain of grocery stores with strong Italian roots, and they make a lot of their own products. Many of their stores sell Longo’s own prepared foods, and also have other options for food stations like pizza and salad bars.
The Longo’s grocery store chain originated with three brothers, Tommy, Joe and Gus, who immigrated to Canada from Sicily, Italy in 1951. They opened their first store at Yonge and Castlefield all the way back in 1956. It was called Broadway Fruit Market, and measured only 1,500 square feet in size.
Since then, the store has grown to over 40 locations and employs more than 6,000 people across their many locations. The third generation of the Longo family still works at the store.
“Today, our family-operated business attributes much of its success to the guiding principle established in 1956 years earlier – we will only serve others what we can confidently serve our own families,” reads the Longo’s website.
Now, the chain is bringing their grocery staples to another area in Toronto. The grocery store chain is planning on opening a new location on the Queensway.
Longo’s held in-person and virtual job fairs during the month of September to prepare for staffing the new store on the Queensway, and they were hiring for roles in all departments of the store.
Positions are actually starting up around now, as the new Queensway location of Longo’s is set to open very soon.
The official Longo’s website says that the new location of Longo’s on the Queensway will be fully decked out with stone pizza ovens, hot and cold bars, fresh butcher, a bakery counter with custom cakes, and more.
The new Longo’s will be located in Etobicoke, right near a Cineplex and a Costco, as well as many restaurants and other outlets of big box chain stores.
The new location of Longo’s will be located at 1061 The Queensway, west of the Gardiner Expressway and Islington Avenue intersection.
Longo’s Queensway is projected to open in November 2025.
