A Toronto venue just announced they’re closing down after over 33 years at their current address and moving to a new location.

The Phoenix Concert Theatre is one of Toronto’s most iconic venues, attracting the biggest acts from around the world and hosting all different kinds of events, from raves to Caribana parties. Before it turned into the Phoenix, the space was known as the Diamond Club.

The venue officially announced in an Instagram post today that they’ll be closing at their current location next year.

“Stay tuned for our new location,” reads the post. “Meantime, let’s celebrate 33 1/3 years of The Phoenix Concert Theatre!”

While the post lets people know that after they close in 2025 they should be relocating to a new space, many still have cherished memories of the specific Sherbourne venue Phoenix has called home for so many years.

Lots of people have commented on the post expressing how they feel about the closure and sharing memories, with people writing comments like “End of an ACTUAL era,” “Damn, lots of great memories in that building,” “wow,” “what” and “sad news.”

“I have so many incredible memories at this place,” one person wrote in a heartfelt comment. “One of the more memorable shows was Gallows when Wade had just started singing for them. Title Fight and Four Year Strong were opening. The intensity at that show was insane. Death From Above 1979… Tokyo Police Club… the Christmas series of shows… man, when Fidlar played there that place was NUTS. I’ve made so many friends in line and in the smokers section. I will remember this place for the rest of my life, truly.”

A proposed 42-storey mixed-use condominium building is in the pre-construction phase at the 410 Sherbourne address, which has been planned to replace the Phoenix for a number of years now.

Globe and Mail entertainment writer Bob Wheeler posted to Twitter that work is scheduled to begin on the development next year, that Phoenix owners are looking for a new location in the downtown area and that they should effectively be closing Jan. 15, 2025.
