Tired of staying in soulless hotels owned by huge multinational corporations? A new hotel that just opened in Ontario might be just what the doctor ordered.
Belvedere Hotel has brought a new touch of timeless relaxation to downtown Kingston. The hotel is housed in a restored historic former chateau that was originally built in 1880.
There are 29 guest rooms inside the hotel in total, and design draws inspiration from a range of eras from the 19th century to art deco to mid-century modern.
The Belvedere is located in Kingston’s historic Old Sydenham Ward, and was originally built by father and son architects named John and Joseph Power, also responsible for other well-known Kingston buildings.
It was originally designed as a private residence, but early on in its history was transformed into a retreat known as the Chateau Belvedere by a local woman.
“Named after the Italian word for a scenic viewpoint, the Belvedere soon gained a reputation as a ‘fashionable’ retreat for society’s elite. Dukes and duchesses, generals, and politicians all flocked to this grand establishment, drawn by its elegance and charm,” reads the Belvedere website.
In 1937, the hotel went through another transformation and was restored, and was “celebrated by Vogue magazine in the 1940s as ‘the only reasonable place to stay between Montreal and Toronto.'”
Rooms are equipped with queen or king beds and some even come with their own terrace. Grand King rooms are part of the original 19th century residence and have high ceilings, huge windows and marble mantles. The Belvedere Rooms at the hotel are the most spacious, luxurious suites with views of Lake Ontario.
The hotel also has its own menu of snacks and small plates designed by chef Matt Demille, and a bathhouse area in the lower level of the hotel for relaxation.
The Belvedere Hotel is presided over by Benjamin Hotels, which operates several properties in the Kingston area, including Smith Hotel and Dwell Aparthotels.
Belvedere Hotel is now open at 141 King St. E. in Kingston.
