Young talent sought to help create Mississauga’s latest work of public art

Young artists from the Malton area of Mississauga are being sought to help create a work of public art in their community.

In its third year, the City of Mississauga’s Parks, Forestry and Environment x Public Art Collaboration is focusing this time on the Malton Greenway.

City officials say two paid mentorship opportunities are available to Malton residents aged 16 to 29 who are interested in photography and videography. The pair selected will help lead artist SHEEEP create a “performance-based, community-engaged” temporary public art project that focuses on climate change and the importance of technology and greenspaces in urban settings.

Applications are open until Jan. 10.

The Malton Greenway project includes components that are responsive to the area such as sounds of a nearby creek and a thermometer showing humidity in the park.

Ward 5 City Councillor Carolyn Parrish said the installation highlights an important topic.

“This exciting project allows us the unique opportunity to connect with 0ne another through art, casts a spotlight on global environmental issues and provides wonderful opportunities for our youth, all while providing great visibility to our community,” she said. “I encourage all our Mississauga youth, especially those in the Malton area, to put forward applications for these opportunities.”

Paul Damaso, Mississauga’s director of arts and culture, said it’s a terrific project.

“This project addresses key priorities for us by engaging youth in making great public spaces while raising awareness of important issues like climate change,” said Damaso. “We’re excited to work with SHEEEP and our local youth artists.”

The City says the completed work will be on display in the Malton Greenway by next spring.
