Patients in need of dialysis treatments can now access them closer to home with the opening of the new haemodialysis clinic at Lakeridge Gardens Long-Term Care Home in Ajax.
The grand opening of the clinic is Friday morning, with a ribbon-cutting at 10 a.m. Located on the first floor of Lakeridge Gardens, the new haemodialysis clinic will bring this specialized treatment closer for Durham Region residents who currently have to drive to Markham or Toronto for treatment.
Hemodialysis is a procedure where a dialysis machine and a special filter called an artificial kidney, or a dialyzer, are used to clean your blood. To get your blood into the dialyzer, the doctor needs to make an access, or entrance, into your blood vessels. This is done with minor surgery, usually to your arm.
