Have you ever noticed a gorgeous or unique piece of art outside or in a hip bar, cafe or restaurant and wanted to take it home with you, only to be deterred by the hefty price tag?
Well, for one day this week, a piece of incredible art could be yours.
For free.
Art aficionados should be thrilled to hear that Free Art Friday Peel will be hitting Brampton, Caledon and Mississauga on–you guessed it–Friday, Sept. 29. Kicking off Culture Days and returning to the Region of Peel for the third year in a row, Free Art Friday is a global movement where artists gift pieces of work (completely free of charge) to residents by leaving them around the cities.
Local artist James Flux told inSauga.com that he’s has teamed up with a host of important and influential local arts and culture organizations, including PAMA, Visual Arts Mississauga, Visual Arts Brampton and Peel Arts Collective to to bring the exciting global event to local residents.
“Imagine a city wide scavenger hunt, where patrons can roam the streets to find free artwork to bring home and enjoy for years to come,” event organizers say. “On Friday, Sept. 29 we hope to flood the whole Region of Peel with free art. Free Art Friday is in an attempt to bring art to those who may not be involved in the art world, as well as creating as many smiles and memories as we can.”
If you’d actually like to participate as an artist rather than a “shopper,” you can do that. Artists are free to leave works they’re happy to part with anywhere they’d like (although organizers do not recommend hiding the work in a place it won’t likely be found).
Participating artists are encouraged to attach a label on the front that reads “Free Art to Take Home” with a brief description of the Free Art Friday movement on the back. A label and a brief description to edit can be found here and here.
Artists and collectors are also encouraged to use the hashtag #FreeArtFridayPeel and take a picture to upload to Instagram, Twitter or Facebook. This way participants can use the hashtag to give them some insight to the free art’s location, as well as let the artist know their
piece has found a new–and hopefully loving–home.
If you’re interested in collecting, you can search the hashtag #FreeArtFridayPeel to see some of the art that’s already been placed in your area.
