For those of you who love square-shaped treats …
Bad news.
A unique and very popular bakery is shuttering its doors in Oakville for good after seven years in the business.
Elm Hill Cookies in Kerr Village has announced its last day of operation is Jan. 13.
“Yes, I know this announcement will be a surprise, but much thought has gone into this decision,” reads a letter to customers from owner Janis Smith.
“There is not a single reason but a number of factors that have led me to believe that it is the right time to hang up my apron.”
The quaint bakery is known for its homemade cookies, which are are baked daily using natural ingredients.
Smith opened the bakery in 2010, and its name was inspired from a cobblestone lane in Norwich, England.
An Elm Hill cookie (priced at $1.10) is hand-cut and square, not round (a reflection of their ‘no corners cut’ philosophy).
Best-sellers included the amazing Pumpkin and Carrot Whoopie Pie with Vanilla Bean filling ($2.25).
Then there was the Kerr Street Cookie (my favourite!).
And we can’t forget about A Little Bit of Everything (which is essentially four types of cookies baked into one — perfect if you’re consistently indecisive, like moi!)
There was always great service and they even delivered to Oakville, Burlington, Mississauga, Hamilton, Toronto, and the surrounding GTA.
Smith acknowledged the “loyal and passionate following” who supported her shop.
“You have no idea how grateful I am,” Smith’s letter continues.
“I will miss coming in every day and talking to you, seeing your children grow and hearing the stories of your life. It is one of my favourite parts of coming to the bakery.”
Elm Hill was so awesome it nearly topped our list of best dessert places in town — to say it’ll be missed is a gross understatement.
We’ll keep you posted with any new developments.
