Unicorn ornament made in Hamilton childhood cancer victim’s memory stolen, artist says

An outdoor ornament that was created to honour a five-year-old Hamilton girl who died of cancer two years ago has been stolen.

The Creative Heart Space Hamilton studio said in a tweet on Friday (Dec. 10) that a uniform decoration went missing in the Crown Point West neighbourhood in Hamilton. The decoration is a hollow statue of a unicorn, raised on their back legs, with lights inside of it and a flowing, magenta-coloured mane and tail. The studio’s tweet used the #EllerysArmy hashtag, in apparent reference to Ellery Clark.

The childhood cancer victim passed away in November 2019 from a rare and aggressive cancer.

The little girl’s bravery gained widespread attention in her final days.

Ellery was a huge fan of the Disney movie “Frozen” and wanted to see the forthcoming release of the sequel, “Frozen 2.” Ellery’s father, Ian Clark, put an appeal on social media to try to fulfill his stricken daughter’s wish. The post went viral, with actor Josh Gad, who voices the character Olaf in the series, tagging Disney in a tweet. Actor-politician Arnold Schwarzenegger also responded to Clark.

Soon thereafter, a Disney executive came to Ellery’s room at McMaster Childen’s Hospital with a copy of the unreleased movie for her to watch.

Creative Heart Space is a studio that was founded in 2018 by Hamilton Arts Award nominee Cadence Machry. Its website says it has shifted “focus… to pop up events, the Creative Heart Space webstore, and grassroots community support projects” since the COVID-19 pandemic led to closing its doors on Main Street East 20 months ago.
