U.S. DJ and music producer Diplo posted a fun prank during a visit to the Toronto Eaton Centre this week.
In a post on Tiktok and Instagram, titled “I am firing my photographer for this…”, Diplo is seen walking through the Toronto Eaton Centre.
“It’s a really nice mall…new mall,” he said in the post on Monday. The first phase of the Eaton Centre opened in 1977.
Diplo asks people what their favourite shop is in the mall as he walks. Then, the person filming taps him on the shoulder and motions toward a person sitting on a bench with an open magazine. He tells Diplo that the person wants an autograph.
“Want me to sign that for you?” Diplo asks as he moves in to sign the book.
The person doesn’t look up and closes the magazine, seemingly confused.
Diplo walks away, shrugs and mumbles: “Didn’t know who I was.”
The man behind the camera laughs at the prank.
But fans responded to the clip, wishing they had seen him in Toronto.
“I will let you sign any book of mine,” one fan said on Tiktok.
“Why didn’t I get the memo,” another person said.

The mall outing appears to have been a casual visit to Toronto, after a show in London, Ontario.
Diplo performed at the Backyard London electronic music festival at Harris Park in London on the weekend, headlining the second night of the festival.
“At a loss for words after @diplo dominated the stage for a mind-blowing ending to BCKYRD. London, you truly showed up tonight,” the festival organizers posted on the weekend.
The musician doesn’t have any scheduled performances in Toronto.
He is back in the U.S. this coming weekend with shows in Seattle and Denver, according to his website.
Thomas Wesley Pentz, who uses the name Diplo professionally, is a co-creator and lead member of the electronic dancehall music project Major Lazer, a member of the supergroup LSD, with Labrinth and Sia; a member of the electronic duo Jack Ü with producer and DJ Skrillex; and a member of Silk City with Mark Ronson.
Born in Mississippi, Diplo spent most of his youth in Miami. He rose to fame after producing M.I.A.’s 2008 breakout single Paper Planes, which gave him mainstream exposure. He has worked with Gwen Stefani, Britney Spears, Beyoncé, the Weeknd, Justin Bieber and many other well-known musicians.
