We got your own personal taste of The Danforth with these knockout sandwiches.
When it comes to flavour and ambience, there is no better area than this historic Toronto neighbourhood.
Colliding into Greektown, The Danforth is one of the city’s best strips to grab an espresso, prosecco, or sandwich. That’s why when it came to picking the area’s best handheld culinary staples, we had our work cut out for us.
Trinacria Espresso Italiano

A Mediterranean gem, this location is as old-school as a cafe gets, complete with pastries, espresso, and, of course, a good, quick sandwich.
To kick off our list, we are keeping it simple and delicious, with Trinacria’s prosciutto arugula sandwich.
Finished with fresh provolone and served on a croissant, if you ever need a quick snack on the east end that won’t break the bank, this is your new go-to.
Komi Banh Mi Bar

Almost every Toronto neighbourhood has a banh mi spot, and Komi is one of the best ones east of the DVP.
When visiting this location, grab the house-style pork sandwich.
This savoury marvel is served on an incredibly fresh baguette, complete with pork that practically melts in your mouth, pickled carrots, cucumber, cilantro, and house sauces.
Fuego’s

A bit further down east on The Danforth is a hidden spot unlike any other.
Fuego’s provides a fresh take on Italian sandwiches with Halal meat. While there is a huge selection on offer, if you are going to grab anything from this spot, it has to be their chopped cheese.
Now, it may not look pretty, but trust us when we say this is likely one of the best of its kind in the city. Chopped beef, melted cheese, sauteed onions, and peppers, all served on a fresh steamed roll — what else is there to say, really?
The Meat Department

One of two in the city, this original Danforth location thrives as a dynamite butcher shop. But, hidden in the back is a phenomenal sandwich counter.
While we were spoiled for choice with this one, we went with The Meat Department’s Cubano sandwich.
Loaded with roasted ham, shredded pork, melted cheese, and pickles, served on griddle toast, this sandwich is literally perfect for any kind of day.
Gianni’s

While we strive not to save the best for last, sometimes it just happens, and with Gianni’s, that is definitely the case.
While a little bit off the main drag of The Danforth, the quick walk down Pape Ave is for sure worth it, as this unassuming little neighbourhood nook has likely the best veal sandwich in the city.
Built on the great sandwich rule of less is more, this sandwich is served on a fresh Italian bun, complete with fried, tender veal, which is glazed with incredibly flavourful in-house marinara sauce.
Whether you choose to load with other toppings on offer is up to you, but we can safely say this sando stands on its own.
