The Northern Lights are coming to the GTA for the first time in 11 years.
To celebrate this once-in-a-decade opportunity, the Ontario Science Centre has created a slate of programs focused on the night sky marvel throughout areas in southern Ontario.
“Every year, people travel thousands of kilometres to see the Northern Lights – but thanks to current solar conditions, they could be visible in southern Ontario this fall,” said Rachel Ward-Maxwell, Staff Astronomer, Ontario Science Centre, in an official statement.
The first in a long series of Northern Lights-themed events will occur in Toronto and Niagara Falls, as on Sept. 3, both the CN Tower and the falls themselves will be lit up with colours representative of the nighttime spectacle, in celebration of their arrival in the province.
At Killarney Provincial Park, an astronomer will help visitors engage in stargazing events to catch a hopeful glimpse of the Northern Lights on a clear night from Sept. 1 to 7.
Algonquin Provincial Park will also offer programming from Sept. 26 to Sept. 28, where visitors will be able to learn about the science behind the natural phenomenon.
Then, to close things out, on Oct. 25, the famous Deerhurst Resort in the Muskoka Region will run a series of family-friendly programming in partnership with the Ontario Science Centre.
