Is there any food as flexible as the sandwich? You can make a sandwich out of almost anything and keep it small enough to work as a light snack — or on the flip side, make it absolutely massive if you’ve got a ravenous appetite.

Peter’s On Eglinton, located at 1035 Eglinton Ave. East in Mississauga, definitely specializes in the latter sandwich. The casual dining restaurant is one you may have passed countless times before, but their menu is nothing to sneeze at. They specialize in American comfort food and some Greek-inspired dishes, with a variety of burgers on a toasted bun, sandwiches, omelettes, pasta, seafood, and pork souvlaki.

I decided to try a sandwich off of their deli menu: Montreal-style smoked meat on rye with dill pickle, with a side of fries and coleslaw. Other sandwiches they offer include hot roast beef, chicken, turkey, steak, and the classic BLT.

THE DISH:

In case you’re unfamiliar with the long process that goes into smoking meat: It starts by salting and curing beef brisket with spices, then allowing the brisket to absorb all of the flavours over a week. The brisket is then hot smoked, cooked through and steamed.

The result is tender and extremely flavourful meat, and that’s exactly what you get with Peter’s sandwich. The brisket was thinly sliced into perfect ribbons of meat, and the quantity of it was massive, piled high on rye bread.

The flavour of the brisket paired well with the zesty crunch of dill pickle, resulting in an amazing overall taste. Just be warned, there’s so much meat here that the sandwich can get a little unwieldy while you’re eating it (but if you don’t mind a bit of a mess then just dig in!). As for the sides, the fries and coleslaw both tasted great and helped round out an already very filling meal.

THE UNIQUE:

Big portions and a ton of carbs are pretty much synonymous with “comfort food”, and Peter’s On Eglinton delivers exactly that in a cozy dining space. There’s something for everyone on their huge menu, whether you’re craving a sandwich, pasta, seafood, American-style burgers and more. Their breakfast menu of omelettes and eggs with your choice of ham, bacon and sausage helps make the restaurant a great dining spot no matter what time of day it is.

THE VERDICT:

Anyone in the mood for a massive sandwich that doesn’t pull its punches would be wise not to ignore Peter’s. If you’re craving quality meat (and a lot of it), we highly recommend giving their Montreal-style smoked meat sandwich a try.
