Middle Eastern and Afghan foods are among the first cuisines that come to mind when I think of food that’s both savoury and filling, and I’m very grateful Mississauga has a great selection of Afghan restaurants for whenever that craving hits.
One such restaurant that definitely deserves some recognition is fast-casual Afghani eatery Naan & Kabob. Located near the intersection of Courtneypark Dr W and Hurontario, the Toronto-based chain combines delicious Afghan style cuisine with a charming and elegant interior that’s very nice for dining in. They also have several locations in Toronto and plan to open a second Mississauga location near Pearson Airport.
Naan & Kabab’s menu features a variety of dinners, wraps and kebabs with different choices of meat (beef, chicken and lamb) and sides including traditional naan bread and curry. For dessert, the restaurant has Baklava as well as Firni, a type of Afghan pudding.
THE DISH:
This was my first time eating at Naan & Kabob so I went with one of their more popular dishes, the Tandoori Chicken Dinner: A marinated, mildly spiced chicken breast skewer served on basmati rice with a side of salad and naan.
This dish boasts seven pieces of some of the tastiest chicken I’ve ever had, with its smoky red exterior belying a white meat that tastes incredibly tender and juicy. The chicken has a slight kick to it without being too spicy, and is piled on top of a generous amount of well-seasoned rice, so you can expect a lot of quantity here in addition to the taste. The salad consists of chopped lettuce, diced onions, tomatoes, and coriander drizzled with sauce – nothing too fancy but still a tasty side that helps balance out the rest of the meal.
Lastly, the restaurant’s classic naan was soft and freshly baked, and tasted amazing with Naan & Kabob’s house sauce that comes served on the side.
THE UNIQUE:
Alongside the flavourful food, I was pleasantly surprised by the restaurant’s elegant-looking interior, which features some very pretty décor – greenery hangs from the ceiling and there’s even an aesthetically pleasing full greenery wall. The restaurant is also spacious and has a lot of comfortable seating, so this is an easy recommendation if you’re looking to dine with a group.
THE VERDICT:
You can’t go wrong with Naan & Kabob for some tasty Afghan cuisine in a comfortable setting. The food was delicious and fresh, and I’m hoping to go back at some point to try some of the other eye-catching dishes on their menu.
