Over three million copies of her first collection of poetry have now been sold, she’s on a world tour, and she calls Brampton home.
That’s right, Brampton, this Sikh Heritage month, renowned poet Rupi Kaur will be performing at the Rose Theatre on Thursday April 26, 2018, at 6 p.m.
The poet, artist, and performer will be bringing her new show based on her second collection of poems The Sun and Her Flowers to life for her audience.
Her first collection, Milk and Honey, sold over three million copies, was translated into more than 35 languages, and took the title for #1 New York Times Bestseller for over 100 consecutive weeks. It’s no surprise that her second book debuted as a global bestseller in 2017.
Kaur has been named one of Forbes’s 30 under 30 and one of BBC’s 100 Women of 2017.
The artist has been drawing and painting since the age of five, and writing and performing since the age of 17. Her first performance was at the Punjabi Community Health Centre in Malton, and she has since performed internationally. She also dabbles in illustration, design, and photography.
A powerful voice of her generation, Kaur first caused a stir in 2015 with a viral Instagram photo of her sleeping with a menstrual bloodstain on her pajamas that was part of a school project. The photo prompted discussion on feminism and biology, and ultimately established Kaur as an artist unafraid to tackle and create conversation around tough topics.
Her two books revolve around exploring femininity, migration love, loss, trauma, and healing.
Tickets range from $25-$45 and they went on sale on Tuesday April 10.
