A pub that has been a fixture of Hamilton’s Corktown neighbourhood for nearly three decades will close in 3½ weeks.
The Cat ‘N’ Fiddle, a British-style pub at the corner of Augusta Avenue and John Street South, is closing permanently on Oct. 2. In an Instagram post on Tuesday (Sept. 7), the owners wrote that the decision to close after a 28-year run was made with a “heavy heart.”
“We hope that we have provided a venue for many special moments and memories for those that have entered our establishment,” the statement read in part. “Many friendships have been formed. We want to thank all of our staff, the musicians and customers that have supported us throughout this endeavour.”

Instantly recognizable thanks in part to its distinct green exterior, the Cat ‘N’ Fiddle’s stocks in trade were live music and pub grub, including its highly regarded fish and chips.
The COVID-19 pandemic, needless to say, affected the ability to have musicians and bands play.
Hamilton musician James Roberts left a supportive comment for the pub.
“Thanks for being such a great supporter of local musicians over the years,” he wrote.
