A popular Hamilton dance bar has decided to close the doors to its clubhouse, but the creative force behind the hotspot says the party is far from over.

The owners of Sous Bas announced via social media on Monday (Feb. 7) that by the end of the month, they would be vacating their home at 145 Main St E.

“Please know this does not mean the end of Sous Bas – just the end of this particular chapter,” an Instagram post announcing the closure said.

“For now we’ve decided not to move forward with the cooperative Clubhouse model we’d been trying, and to close the doors of our basement party lair at the end of this month.”

While Sous Bas got its start as a hot little nightclub in downtown Hamilton, it developed into something much more resembling a community hub that provided a safe space for inclusive programming and events.

With the onslaught of COVID-19, Sous Bas pivoted programming, offering virtual dance sessions called ‘Bedroom Dancing’ and hosting Sous Bay Sundays down at the Hamilton waterfront in the summer of 2021 for the Pier 8 Pop Up series.

Most recently and in the wake of the pandemic, Sous Bas’s Main Street home has operated the space as a collaborative co-programming events venue.

While the pandemic undoubtedly took its toll on the business, owners say the decision to close the Main Street clubhouse is due to the fact that they want to move on to other projects.

“We both just feel it’s time to put our energy into new and different things, and we’re excited about that,” Monday’s Instagram post said.

In the meantime, Sous Bas will be closing out their last month at the clubhouse in true Sous Bas style — with some parties.

“In good news, there will still be parties happening every Friday and Saturday for the next three weeks, and a few weeknight events too,” the post said.

“Fridays will be Clubhouse member events, and then we’ll be doing three last “Sous Bas Saturdays” featuring the final editions of some of our longest-standing and most beloved parties: The Kids Want Techno (Feb 12), Tender (Feb 19), and Glow of Love (Feb 26 – our last night!).”
