One of Toronto’s (if not Canada’s) most significant cultural institutions is about to open a new ‘secret’ bar for a short time only to celebrate a major milestone–and the bar will offer a little mystery, a lot of style, cocktails, art and intrigue.
Recently, the Art Gallery of Ontario announced plans to open a hidden speakeasy in its Grange House library to celebrate its upcoming 125th birthday. The speakeasy will open twice a week for a limited time in the gallery’s on-site historic house and offer a three-course cocktail menu with “food pairings that retell the stories of the AGO.”
“Join us for a night of mystery, elegance, and indulgence at our exclusive Speakeasy,” the gallery wrote on its website.
“As we celebrate the AGO turning 125, we connect with our roots by opening up the historic library for a unique and exciting experience.”
The speakeasy, which will kick off on May 16 and run every subsequent Wednesday and Friday throughout May, June and September, is one of a number of events being held to mark over 100 years of Ontario’s premier art gallery.
Other events on tap include an official birthday bash for the AGO on May 15, AGO Friday Nights (which will feature maker nights, performances, Awkward Date Tours and more), and the AGO’s signature fundraising gala, Art Bash, in September.
Cocktails on the menu include Prohibition Punch (made with El Gobernador Pisco, chamomile tea, pineapple, lemon, Eau de Thé syrup, lemon oleo saccharum and freshly grated nutmeg), the aptly-named Monet’s Garden (made with Hendrick’s gin, Briottet Violette, Elora cassis, chamomile-infused rum, wildflower honey, lavender bitters, lemon and orange blossom water), and the To Harriet (with Grand Marnier, Galliano, Aztec chocolate bitters, fresh orange juice, cream and chocolate flake).
Food choices include a Beggar’s Bindle with fig, brie, toasted walnut and honey, southern fried chicken or cauliflower and a pineapple upside down cake.
A mocktail list is also available for those who want to imbibe without really imbibing.
Seatings are at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. and reservations opened this month. Tickets are $50 per person and include access to the gallery.
