New train cars announced for Toronto’s TTC set for 2030

A long-awaited update to one of Toronto’s busiest transit lines has just been revealed.
A recent release has unveiled the upcoming new look for the TTC’s Line 2 train cars.
The heavily frequented transit line has been rocking retro cars for multiple decades, which resulted in provincial and city powers announcing a sweeping $758 million investment to update them in 2023.
Add another lump sum from the federal government in 2024, and the price tag for the new cars went up to $1 billion.
“Line 2 is getting a major boost for the people who ride it every day,” said Olivia Chow, Mayor of Toronto, in an official statement. “We applaud the provincial and federal governments for helping keep transit reliable for Torontonians. These new trains mean shorter waits, more reliable trips, and better connections across the city. We are working to deliver a more affordable, safe and caring city for Torontonians.”

As a result, Line 2 — an expansive 26 km straight shot from Etobicoke to Scarborough — will be getting sleek red and black high-capacity modern cars that will, according to the recent release, be able to carry up to 1,100 passengers each.
As for when the city can expect these shiny new additions to the TTC, officials indicated that the existing cars are reaching their intended shelf life by the end of 2026 and that it will take roughly three to four years to manufacture and install these new models.
So those looking for a fresh new ride on Toronto’s public transit will likely have to wait until 2030.
