Hamilton Winterfest is happening throughout the month of February, and this weekend, the community can dance and channel the past by lacing up their skates atop Jackson Square.

Some may remember when an ice rink on the Jackson Square roof was a regular fixture. Well, it’s back as part of Friday’s opening night festivities for Hamilton Winterfest’s 2023 HUB.

“Hamilton Winterfest is bringing back the nostalgic fun of rooftop skating by installing a massive temporary ice rink as part of the Winterfest Hub,” according to the event’s official website.

To add some sparkle, organizers commissioned Quebec artist Nate Nettleton to create a giant iridescent disco ball that will be installed next to the rink.

Skate rentals will be available through City Skate Rentals.

Opening night will feature more than 20 art installations from around the world, food, and hot drinks.

“Be one of the first to experience this year’s excitement on the rooftop of Jackson Square,” the website reads..

Friday will include the cha-cha-cha and mambo sounds of the Luis Franco Worldwide Salsa Band at 7 p.m. and 8 p.m., and free salsa dance lessons with Trevor Copp of Tottering Biped Theatre.

Jackson Square isn’t the only spot for Winterfest fun, either. This weekend, events will happen at various locations, including the central public library, the Art Gallery of Hamilton, Levity Comedy Club and Lounge, Ancaster Memorial Arts Centre, Royal Hamilton Light Infantry Hall, FirstOntario Concert Hall, and Gourley Park.

Artists will also take to the streets Friday night for James North Artcrawl.

Hamilton Winterfest runs until Feb. 20, 2023.
