With a GoodLife Fitness set to close, fitness options in downtown Hamilton have further weakened.

Per a post on r/Hamilton, the largest health club chain in Canada will permanently close its location inside Jackson Square mall at the end of next month. A notice shared on the news aggregator says the last day of business at the 2 King St. W. location, which is accessible from Wilson St., will be June 30.

GoodLife has five other locations in Hamilton. But none of them are in the core of the lower city. That area of Hamilton also lost another gym in early 2021, when Crunch Fitness closed its location in Hamilton City Centre.

“Our decision to close this location was made after discussions with our landlord about the terms of our lease,” a notice from GoodLife reads. “After reviewing our current offerings in the area, as well as the decline in member usage at this particular location over several years, we made the decision to close our Hamilton Jackson Square Club.”

Members who have one-club access memberships will be given access to try any other club in Ontario for the next three months. Their membership will be transferred to the club they use the most. GoodLife also says that personal trainers who met clients at the Jackson Square club will be reaching out to make arrangements to meet at other locations.

GoodLife’s locations in Hamilton include:

  • Lime Ridge for Women, 883 Upper Wentworth St.
  • Upper James and Rymal, 1550 Upper James St.
  • Queenston Place, 640 Queenston Rd.
  • Stone Church and Upper Ottawa, 1070 Stone Church Rd. E.
  • Ancaster Wilson and McClure, 1096 Wilson St. W.

GoodLife has about 450 locations across the country.
