Popular furniture store Ikea, known for offering a range of more affordable home goods, plans to close one of its Toronto stores in 2026.

Today, Ikea Canada announced that it plans to shutter its Scarborough Town Centre location in response to “a rapidly evolving retail landscape and changing consumer behaviour.”

The retailer’s other Toronto locations are not impacted.

The closure, announced in an Oct. 7 press release, is expected to occur early in the new year. According to the news release, the store will remain open to the public, and a specific closing date will be shared in the future.

“We are constantly renewing and improving our business in order to remain relevant in an ever-changing retail world and to secure our future as a leading omnichannel retailer for generations to come,” said Selwyn Crittendon, CEO and chief sustainability officer for Ikea Canada, in a news release.

“This decision has not been taken lightly and even as we respond to market needs, we are committed to putting our people first and leading with our culture and values through this transition.”

The Scarborough Town Centre location is one of the new, smaller-format stores Ikea had been testing in several markets globally.

It opened in August 2023 and employs 130 people.

The furniture company said caring for and supporting the employees through the transition is “the company’s highest priority and the retailer aims to minimize the impact as much as possible.”

Ikea also operates stores in North York, Etobicoke, Downtown Toronto and Burlington.
