Everyone is welcome to join a huge potluck with a 100-foot rainbow table this weekend in Toronto.
The Metropolitan United Church at 56 Queen St. E. is hosting what is expected to be Canada’s largest church potluck on Sunday, June 8, according to a press release from the church.
The event celebrates The United Church of Canada’s 100th anniversary. The rainbow table will stretch across McGill Square Park. The rainbow is “a vibrant symbol of welcome, community and pride.”
“All are invited to bring a dish and take part in this joyful, inclusive celebration,” the church said.
The potluck lunch starts at 12:30 p.m.
This event is part of 100 Tables, a national campaign by The United Church of Canada to transform picnic tables into spaces for connection and justice.
Held during Pride Month, the Toronto gathering honours the United Church’s longstanding relationship with the 2S and LGBTQIA+ community, the church said. The United Church was one of the first denominations in Canada to affirm and ordain openly queer ministers.
“100 Tables invites people of all identities to break bread and build community,” said Reverend Jason Meyers, minister for worship and faith formation at Metropolitan United Church. “This isn’t just a potluck, it’s a statement of love, inclusion and radical welcome where we invite all to have a place at the table.”
Founded before the United Church itself, Metropolitan hosted its first national gathering in 1925. Nearly 100 years later, it’s once again opening its doors and tables to the public.
