Brampton’s Dainesha Nugent-Palache is one of three winners of this year’s New Generation Photography Award.
The up-and-coming artist will receive a $10,000 prize and exposure for her “painterly” portraits of women which caught the attention of jurors.
Other winners included Dustin Brons, of Vancouver, who earned praise for drawing from sources ranging from Instagram to real estate ads to reframe the way we read images, and Chris Donovan of Saint John, N.B., for rooting his work in the history of documentary photography.
Founded by Scotiabank and the National Gallery of Canada, the New Generation Photography Award is awarded aims to elevate the careers of Canadians aged 35 and under who work in lens-based art.
“The jury was very impressed with the calibre of work received,” said Andrea Kunard, Jury Chair and Associate Curator, Photographs, the National Gallery of Canada. “Dainesha’s powerful portraits of women have a rich, painterly quality.
“She uses light in a sculptural way to mold and give presence to her subjects.”
Along with their $10,000 prize, this year’s winners will also have their work featured in two group exhibitions alongside last year’s award recipients.
One outdoor exhibition will be held at Ryerson University in Toronto as part of the Scotiabank Contact Photography Festival from April 30 to Oct. 3.
COVID-19 restrictions permitting, another show is scheduled to be held this fall at Ottawa’s National Gallery of Canada.
