A unique restaurant that recently won a very prestigious competition appears to have closed down in Mississauga, but it is not yet clear if the closure is permanent or temporary.

Kantene, which recently took the top spot in the Ontario Veal Appeal’s annual Ontario’s Best Veal Sandwich 2019 competition, has been closed for several weeks.

According to signage on the restaurant’s door, the inventive Dundas restaurant is temporarily closed for an equipment repair.

However, the restaurant’s website has been deactivated and its Facebook and Instagram pages can no longer be found.

Insauga.com has reached out to the restaurant to ask about the closure but has not received a response as of publication time.

If Kantene is closed, the city’s food scene has indeed lost a gem. The decidedly modern restaurant, located just east of Hurontario on Dundas St., is a relatively new comfort food restaurant that combines counter and table service.

Specializing in fusion cuisine, the restaurant excelled with its absolutely delicious vegetarian pizza (topped with eggplant and zucchini), flavourful feta-covered lamb burger (complete with a fresh bun from the Rose Bakery next door) and indulgent hand-cut fries.

The restaurant was invited to compete in the veal sandwich competition two years in a row and this past summer, the resto placed first among 83 nominations. The final event in the sandwich search had the top three makers presenting their best in front of friends and family at The Market Kitchen in Toronto’s St. Lawrence Market.

Judging was overseen by John Catucci, host of You Gotta Eat Here! and the new Big Food Bucket List on The Food Network Canada. Sian Burns and Dina Marsillo of Kitchener’s Nostra Cucina (the duo who won last year’s competition) and Tom Kroesbergen, chair of the Veal Farmers of Ontario, also judged the competition.

Here’s hoping the award-winning Kantene isn’t gone for good.
