One of Europe’s top gift retailers is moving forward on its ambitious Canadian expansion plan, with a brand new location slated to open in Mississauga this fall.

Flying Tiger Copenhagen — or just Flying Tiger — is an immensely popular shop that specializes in accessible household supplies.

The store, which made its Canadian debut in Toronto’s famous CF Eaton Centre, is now expanding well beyond downtown Toronto, having opened a location at Vaughan Mills this past summer; Mississauga’s Square One is shaping up to be its next debut.

“We’ve been hearing from people who have been eagerly waiting for us to arrive, so it’s incredibly rewarding to see the opening getting closer and to know that soon they’ll be able to experience the brand for themselves,” Eithne Lavin, general manager of Flying Tiger Copenhagen Canada, told YourCityWithIN in an email.

In terms of what you can expect, shoppers can find funky home and kitchen supplies, such as cute dish towels, artsy glassware, and a massive selection of European stationery, all of which are put in a retail space that is formatted to allow you to stumble into each section, making a small adventure out of the shopping experience.

While southern Ontario shopping centres are no strangers to shops selling attractively priced goods, Flying Tiger has turned heads with its plan to expand ambitiously in Canada, the first North American market it’s targeting.

At the grand opening of the Eaton Centre location in the summer, Lavin told YourCityWithIn that the plan to enter the country was 10 years in the making.

“It’s been a long time coming,” she said at the time, adding that this is the 45th market for the company and one that makes sense because of the distinct seasons and the brand’s ability to pivot to offer products geared to not just the weather, but also various holidays.

“Why not Canada? It’s part of the global expansion plan. It’s such a wide, diverse market,” she said.

In an email, Lavin said that items in the store are in a state of constant rotation and that inventories flip with every season. Since the brand opened its first locations in Toronto and Vaughan, it’s moved on from more summery offerings to fall and Halloween-themed products.

As for why Square One is the next stop on its list, Lavin said that setting up shop in the GTA’s largest and most undisputed shopping centre was a no-brainer.

“It’s a destination where people come to discover new brands, spend time with family and friends, and find something unexpected—and that sense of discovery is at the heart of what we do. We’re looking forward to becoming part of the Square One community and bringing our unique mix of Danish design, creativity and everyday affordability to Mississauga.”

In terms of how Flying Tiger stands out amid the competition of the suburban shopping mall, Lavin said that Flying Tiger doesn’t compare itself to brands with similar product assortments.

“It’s design, it’s value, and it’s this in-store experience that we offer. So we feel like we’re unique on the market,” Lavin told YourCityWithIN during a previous interview.

Lavin further indicated — amid the GTA’s current cost-of-living crisis — that Flying Tiger’s established reputation for affordability is perfect for the modern era, as people are looking for high quality that won’t drain their wallets.

As a result, 80 per cent what’s on shelves, whether toys, games, office supplies, or home and kitchen goods, is under $10.

Beyond that, Flying Tiger’s team in Scandinavia designs everything in-house.

As for the primary clientele Flying Tiger is looking to entice, there is really no one group, as Lavin indicated that the store, due to its balancing act of quality and quantity, is for just about everyone.

“To see people are genuinely excited about it. We’ve got reactions of people who are looking forward to exploring the brand for the first time.”

As for when the GTA can expect this new location to open its doors, the Square One Flying Tiger location is expected to open Nov. 10.

“We’re looking forward to becoming part of the Square One community and bringing our unique mix of Danish design, creativity and everyday affordability to Mississauga. There’s a lot we’re excited to share, and we can’t wait to welcome everyone through our doors soon!”
