An iconic Toronto summer festival is returning this week to help kick off the summer.
Luminato — a popular citywide arts festival — is celebrating its 20th anniversary with an immense slate of programming running throughout Toronto for nearly all of this month.
The longest consecutive streak in the festival’s history, according to representatives.
In keeping with past programming, Luminato anchors itself on a theme as a throughline for its vast selection of visual, performance, and musical art.
This year’s theme, called PLAY, is exactly what it says on the box, showcasing a continuous focus on celebration through acts of theatre, circus, dance, opera, music, magic, film, and public art.

Themes explored will include ‘child’s play,’ featuring a more jovial essence, ‘equal play,’ featuring art that dials in on the imbalance in the world, and ‘ power play,’ which acts that showcase struggle and its end result through art and performance.
“Luminato is a bright reflection of all that is great about Toronto,” said Celia Smith, CEO of Luminato Festival. “After 20 years, I’m immensely proud that our friends and neighbours continue to join us in joyful celebration of this vibrant global city.”
A final theme also includes ‘replay,’ where festival favourites are set to return to some old favourites, including the iconic RedBall Toronto by Kurt Perschke, which returns as a huge installation that runs daily across downtown Toronto, as well as the sweeping compositions of The Philip Glass Ensemble, and the legendary magician duo of Penn & Teller.

Other acts throughout the festival include, but are certainly not limited to, Juno Award-winner Divine Brown, with DJ Starting from Scratch and guest vocalist Glenn Lewis, celebrating the foundation of the Soul genre, as well as Heartbreak Hotel, a cathartic comedy of breakup ballads.
Countless other performances and interactive installations will also be dotted throughout the city for the month-long celebration.
A full list of programming for this year’s Luminato festival can be found on their official website, with the celebration set to take over the city from June 3 to June 28.
