Summer is here, and so is strawberry season in southern Ontario.

Depending on the year, strawberries usually reach their peak from mid-June to late July.

While greenhouse growers can offer the berries year-round, there is nothing like going out to a field and picking the freshest fruit for yourself.

There are several farms that offer pick-your-own options for families looking for a fun day out. Typically, farms ask people not to sample the fruit while picking, and people must use the containers supplied by the farm.

Prices depend on the size of the basket and can range from $4 to over $50 for a large container. Opening hours vary, and the supply could run out so it is best to check before heading out.

Here are five farms near Toronto that offer pick-your-own:

Downey’s Strawberry and Apple Farm

Located in Caledon, this family farm is operated by a seventh-generation farmer. It is open daily from 7 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. during the strawberry season.

Picking opened on June 16.

The farm is at 13707 Heart Lake Rd., Caledon.


Robintide Farms

Located in King City, north of Toronto, Robintide has been a family farm in Vaughan for more than 50 years. Over recent years, Robintide Farms has been growing its offerings of local farm-fresh pick-your-own and picked-for-you strawberries, vegetables, flowers and more each spring and summer, as well as pick-your-own pumpkins in the fall.

Pick-your-own strawberries started on June 22.

The farm is located at 2720 King Vaughan Rd., King.


Barrie Hill Farms

For 50 years, Barrie Hill Farms has been a go-to spot for berry picking, the fresh country air and peaceful scenery. The family farm has scenic wagon rides and a market.

The farm has three varieties of strawberries — Annapolis, Jewel and Albion.

Pick-your-own season is from the end of June to mid-July.

The farm is located at 2935 Barrie Hill Rd., Springwater.


Rock Garden Farms

This family-run country market has been serving the community for 45 years. Located in Caledon East, Rock Garden Farms has greenhouses, flowers, fresh produce and baked goods.

Pick-your-own strawberry season has begun.

The farm is located at 16930 Airport Rd.


Tigchelaar Berry Farms

Located in Niagara, Tigchelaar Berry Farms has been family-run since 1940, and strawberries have been at the heart of it.

The farm typically offers pick-your-own strawberries for three weeks starting in June.

Visitors can also check out the Red Barn Farm Market for fresh local produce, baked goods and strawberries.

The farm is located at 4159 Jordan Rd, Jordan Station.
