There’s a full summer of fun programming coming up at a space that used to be an old airport, and the best part is it’s all totally free.
YZD is a new community space by Northcrest Developments at the former Downsview Airport lands that’s already been playing host to all sorts of cool happenings like an experimental interactive rave.
“First and foremost, it’s about sparking joy, whether it’s providing fun, meaningful or educational moments,” Alana Mercury, Director of Programming & Placemaking for Northcrest Developments, tells YourCityWithIN.com.
“In such a big and busy city like Toronto, we know that people are craving connection and unique experiences. At the same time, we’re always pushing ourselves to introduce new types of activities and events that don’t currently exist in this area of the city.”
Now, they’re going full tilt with a summer packed with programming called For the Love of Free, happening from now until October.
“We’re working to put YZD on the map—both literally and figuratively, by having clear and consistent messaging about what we are creating and making it easy to get here and get around,” says Mercury.
“We’re always asking ourselves, how can we push the boundaries of what people can experience in this city, all while bringing these spaces to life so as many people as possible can explore and experience them?”
Programming will include interactive art exhibitions starting up in June, like Runway Rivers where you can “paddle” a makeshift “canoe” along painted pathways, and Moving Forest which features trees growing out of shopping carts.
From July 19 to 20, there’s Hangar Jam, with artwork on shipping containers, a community mural, skateboard and dance competitions, skateboarding lessons and live DJs. On August 9 and 10, Play on the Runway returns to YZD with roller skating and scooter rentals, skateboarding and roller-skating lessons, and performances by professional kite flyers.
From June to October, YZD will also be putting on their first ever farmers’ market with farmers, artisans, and vendors selling produce, handmade goods and ready-to-eat items. There will also be live music and nature workshops at the market.
And yes, every single thing is free.
“Our goal is to ensure YZD is a place that is welcoming to all,” says Mercury. “Supported by the wide range of commercial activity, such as Rogers Stadium, on-site, we are able to create a model that allows for free programming. This approach allows us to bring a diversity of needed programming at scale.”
Beyond the summer, YZD will once again play host to Runway Reels this fall, a drive-in movie event, as well as outdoor ice rink Hangar Skate in the winter.
“We’re in constant conversations to understand what local communities want, anticipating what could resonate, and inviting local partners to the table to program collaboratively,” says Mercury. “Through this ongoing dialogue, we’ve been able to continually evolve, adapt, and refine our offerings to better serve and inspire those who visit.”
